Abstract:

Background and Aim: Intracranial Arachnoid Cysts (IAC) are suitable choices for endoscopic procedure to avoid craniotomy or shunt placement. Our main objective is to study the outcome of endoscopic procedure in IAC treatment.  Methods and Materials/Patients: In this descriptive and retrospective study, we report our experience of 27 symptomatic patients with IAC who underwent endoscopic surgery at National Institute of Neurosciences Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh from January 2009 to December 2016. The recorded data of patients’ management including operations, outcomes, and follow up were studied retrospectively. The diagnosis was confirmed by neuroimaging, surgery and histopathological examination. Patients were postoperatively followed up on regular basis.  Results: Size of the IAC decreased (significant to minimal) in all cases. Even where size reduction was minimal, patients’ symptoms improved significantly. No IAC increased in size after endoscopic procedure. There was no recurrence of symptoms in the follow up period. There was no postoperative mortality or major morbidity related to the surgery. Conclusion: Based on our results, most of symptomatic IAC cases can be managed by endoscopic procedure which seems to be a safe and effective method.

Inflamed Symptomatic Sellar Arachnoid Cyst: Case Report

Sellar arachnoid cysts are rare; an infected arachnoid cyst is extremely rare as only one case has been reported to date in the literature. Here, we report a patient with an infected or inflamed sellar arachnoid cyst that was successfully treated with transsphenoidal surgery (TSA). A 53-year-old female with a history of chronic sinusitis developed a headache 5 months ago, and one month before a...

Surgical management of intracranial arachnoid cysts: clinical and radiological outcome.

AIM Intracranial arachnoid cysts account for 1% of all intracranial mass lesions and may require drainage if symptomatic. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 45 consecutive patients who underwent surgical drainage for symptomatic intracranial cysts at our institution from January 2000 to January 2010. The average age of our patients was 36.2 years; 26 were ...

Intracranial symptomatic giant arachnoid cyst of the interhemispheric fissure presenting with frontal lobe syndrome.

Symptomatic interhemispheric arachnoid cysts (ACs) are extremely rare lesions seen more frequently in the elderly. Only 13 cases of symptomatic interhemispheric ACs in the elderly have previously been reported. Herein, we describe a 70-year-old female with symptoms of vertigo, memory and behavior disturbances. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a giant arachnoid cyst (AC) on the interhem...

Surgical Treatment of Suprasellar Arachnoid Cyst Dr. A. Barth, Neurochirurgische Klinik, Inselspital, CH-3010 Bern (Switzerland) Dear Sir, Suprasellar arachnoid cysts often present with hydrocephalus [1, 2]. Symptomatic Unilateral Subdural Effusion as the First Presentation of Suprasellar Arachnoid Cyst

Background and Importance: Arachnoid cysts are benign nontumoral lesions that are usually found incidentally in brain imaging. Suprasellar Arachnoid Cysts (SSACs) are rare. They can cause hydrocephalus and increased intracranial pressure, lower cranial nerve impairment and endocrine disorder. Sometimes arachnoid cysts become complicated by subdural hematoma/hygroma.  Case Presentation: We...
